‘We will come back to open the time capsule after twenty years, that’s our promise. ’ Said Mrs. Wong Yut Ying, Amy. Amy grew up in Tai Po district, the area next to the Tai Po railway station was the place that she played and grew together with her friend, Mrs. Lam Yi Ki, Kate.

Amy and Kate went to the same kindergarten, studied in the same primary school and entered the same secondary school. Eventually they have become very good friend. They shared joys and happiness, being the strongest back up of each other. ‘No one can replace her deep in my heart. ’ said Amy.

In the sixties, only wealthy families could own a computer at home. Singing karaoke and watch a film were rare at that time. Children usually go to parks and undeveloped areas to spend their leisure time. The area next to the Tai Po railway station was one of the favorite places among youngsters who lived around, so Amy and Kate thought that area was their secret paradise, which they could create happiness and memories.

‘In the age of eighteen, we made a time capsule and buried it beside this tree. I can still remember how excited we were while making the time capsule. ’ shared Amy. They wrote a letter to each other talking about their hopes for the future and promised to open it in twenty years later. ‘We burry our time capsule here because we have had so many memories related to this place, the Tai Po railway station is just like a secret garden that owned by us.’ Amy Said joyfully.

However, time has make things impossible for them. One year later, Kate moved to Kowloon due to some reason and she has left a contact number for Amy. ‘I am really angry with myself being so absentminded that I lost her contact number on the day that she moved her house.’ cried Amy. This has been one of the most regretful things in her life.

On the other hand, the Tai Po railway station was closed in 1983. It has turned into a civic museum and opened to public in 1985. “Our memories are deeply buried by the cement after the renewal of the Tai Po railway station.” Sighed Amy.

From that day onwards, Amy goes to the Tai Po railway museum wherever she is free. She just sits on the bench and dream of the time they that had in the past. She hopes that one day she will meet Kate there by chance and share the happiness and memories again with Kate like they do in the past.

Everything has its own value in people’s heart. For Amy, the Tai Po railway museum symbolizes her childhood, her growth and her friendship with Kate. Although it is not quite possible for them to reunion in the future, Amy still want to go to the Tai Po railway museum every day to hope Kate will come back and retrospection the place that full of their memories.

ABOUT:
Our group has decided to make Tai Po Railway Museum as our chosen heritage site. The reasons for our decision is because railways, especially in the early development of Hong Kong, were used extensively for linking families, communities as well as for business and leisure purposes. It played an important role both in individual and community development especially regarding social development. Railway meant people could now afford to travel to visit relatives and families near and far. Railways and railway stations like the one in Tai Po are a unique form of our heritage and by accessing records, documents, photographs and perhaps oral recollections, we will be able to fully understand the social and cultural impact on our heritage. We also plan to interview those couples (who are) taking wedding photos using Tai Po Railway Station as a backdrop to see whether they are aware of its very special and heritage value.
